VITA / Tax Prep Program

Excellent! You have chosen to use our portal to start the tax filing process. United Way of Northern New Jersey is partnering with the IRS, NORWESCAP and Greater Providence Missionary Baptist Church to offer free tax preparation services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The online portal is a safe and secure way to submit your tax documents for our IRS certified volunteers to prepare your tax return.

While COVID has forced us to distance, you will still have a chance to interact with your tax preparer during the preparation process. Be on the lookout for emails to schedule phone or zoom calls to answer questions and to review your completed tax return prior to submission.

What follows is a series of web pages asking you questions, prompting you for your tax-related information - including digitized/scanned copies of relevant documents. You can use this online portal either via any internet-connected computer, or mobile smart phone. But before getting started with this online intake process...

You will need the following files readily available:

  • Digitized/Scanned copies of social security card or ITIN letters for all persons on your tax return.
  • Digitized/Scanned copy of your photo ID (such as valid driver's license) for you and your spouse.
  • Digitized/Scanned copies of tax documents such as Forms W-2, 1099, 1098, 1095.
  • Valid, working email address.
  • Valid, working mobile phone number.

Note: The only types of attachments/uploads that we accept are image files (e.g. - .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png), Word files (e.g. - .doc, .docx), PDF files, Text files (e.g. - .txt), or Excel files (e.g. - .xls, .xlsx). No other file formats are accepted. In addition, each file can be no larger than 16 MB (16 Megabytes) in file size.

The Online (Faster) Option

This option is our online intake process, and serves as a fast, secure, and convenient way to submit your information and digitized/scanned documents. You simply need any internet-connected computer, or mobile smart phone (as well as the aforementioned digitized/scanned documents). By using this option, you will save time, and the IRS certified tax preparer will be able to receive and then process your tax return much faster for you. Also, because this option is fully virtual, it helps to avoid concerns around visiting physical facilities, especially during this era of Covid-19.

The Offline (Slower) Option

If you do not have the technology readily available to use this portal via our online intake process, that's ok, we do offer other, offline options. Bear in mind, the following options will make the preparation of your tax returns much slower than using the online portal. The options below might also require you to visit the facilities of participating volunteer sites and/or rely on postal services. Drop offs are by appointment only at very limited locations.
